In the novel Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey, we the reader see the gradual evolution of moral understanding that the young protagonist endures as he observes the morality of others. A cry for help from the town’s half-caste misfit soon triggers the burdening question that the young boy carries with him throughout the novel, the truth emerging as his silent observations strip away faux facades leaving the justice of right and wrong. Charlie is best described as a wallflower, the unlikely hero who seems to shy way from confrontation and perceives the world on the basis of words written by the likes of Harper Lee and Mark Twain. Silvey’s careful composition of the character enables us to perceive the story on an un-biased and open-minded basis. Within the opening chapter, Charlie is placed in an unfamiliar position, challenging his initial thoughts on right and wrong, â€Å"We have drowned her. We are monster†. The young sheltered boy who has committed this act alongside the infamous Jasper Jones begins his journey with an undying sense of uncertainty, but we soon see how Charlie perceives Jasper, his fellow accomplice; â€Å"I think he’s the most honest person in this town†. This bold friendship, formed in secrecy, exposes young Charlie to ever looming maturity, a window into a world that leaves the truth bare and sees the faults that lie within the streets of Corrigan. Charlie has yet to experience this in its full glory but Jasper’s presence trigger the rise of inquisitive questions in young Charlie’s mind. Throughout the novel we see the prominent theme of prejudice and ill-conceived mindsets that the small mining town of Corrigan contains, resulting in outcasts with reputations built on fiction. The wild ways of jasper Jones seems to blanket this town through false sightings and personal accounts. Jasper Jones ­Ã‚ ­Ã‚ ­Ã‚ ­Ã¢â‚¬â€the poster boy for bad behaviour. As Charlie  winces down strong spirits that burn his throat to the pit of his stomach, he listens intently to Jasper’s drunken ramblings, words that leave a deeper meaning in the readers mind. â€Å"†¦nuthin up there that gives a shit if I took a pack of smokes or lifted a tin of beef, I’m left with myself, and I know what’s right and what isn’t.† The beauty of his justification, through the raw eyes of someone who has witnessed the truth behind ‘conventional morality’, leaves a great influence on Charlie. His entire conception of ethics being shattered by Jasperâ€⠄¢s words on small town morality, an empty hollow shell covered with tales of Godly observers who bring fear to mortals, rules set by society which are left insignificant and disregarded by many. Hardship and the knowledge of Corrigan’s conventional morality, a victim of its lies have influenced Jasper’s unique look on ethics. As the novel progresses Charlie begins to evolve into a mature adolescent. Jasper’s influence on Charlie—whether it is from having his first swig of alcohol or changing and broadening his perspective on moral code—is a major element to Charlie’s understanding, as is discovery, mainly of the hypocrisy that runs through the town. Major honorable figures are soon seen as disgraceful citizens who contain contradictory morals, which co-exist nevertheless. Following the beating Jasper receives—without justification—from the Sarge, Charlie remains astounded at the truth †Ã¢â‚¬ ¦if I hadn’t touched the ugly pink pucker with my fingertips, I wouldn’t suspect this man to be the monster he was†. The rate of faux facades that shatter throughout the journey escalate, as does Charlie’s understanding of right and wrong; â€Å"†¦someone mentioned Jasper Jones. The same way they did when the post office burned to the gro und†¦And I understand then that maybe we really did do the wrong thing for the right reason†. This pivotal thought marks the point when Charlie’s uncertainty evaporated, his one dimensional view on justice and morality evolving into a far more complex understating. The novel described as a ‘coming-of-age’ story, is true throughout Charlie’s journey. The development of the character within such a short time frame is conducted through experience and various influences, some which act as building blocks and others that rip away the veil of ignorance. As the novel concludes Charlie joins his fellow accomplice in seeing Corrigan and  Ã¢â‚¬Ëœconventional morals’ in its true light.

The Chinese immigrated to the United States in during the 1800s; Official records show that before 1857, 46 Chinese immigrants were in the United States. Over the next 30 years more that 200,000 Chinese had immigrated to the United States. This immigration wave was largely because of the push of the awful conditions in China and the pull of the discovery of gold, and, job opportunities in the west (Immigration and the United States, Schafer, 2006). During the 1860s railroad work was abundant. The two lines, Central Union and Pacific Union, were the largest employer of the Chinese and the Irish. Working the Central Union was dangerous work through rough terrain. The work was dominated by the Chinese. Despite being 90% of the laborers the Chinese were paid less that the Irish who were 10% of the laborers. This dual labor market continues until the completion of the railroads. Regardless of being the majority of the laborers, the Chinese were excluded from the Golden Spike ceremony in Promontory, Utah. After the completion of the completion of the railroad, the Chinese immigrants continued to accept work that others would not do. This caused an industrial dependence on cheap labor to fuel the American economy. The Chinese were welcome as the economy needed them. When the labor was finished, they were no longer welcome. The Chinese welcome was short lived because of stereotypes that were prevalent before immigration. American traders and Protestant missionaries spoke to the American people of the Chinese exotic and sinister manners. These stereotypes caused sinophobia. This sinophobia directly resulted in the â€Å"Yellow Peril†, a threatened expansion of Asian populations as magnified in western immigration (answers. com). Takai, in 1989, noted that the fear of the Yellow Peril shattered any appetite to learn more about the customs of the Chinese, or, themselves as a people. Sinophobia was compounded when the government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. This government action not only outlawed Chinese immigration and naturalization for 10 years, but it led the American people to further discrimination; any thought that the discrimination was unjust and unfounded was alleviated through the governmental act. At the end of the act’s 10 year run, it was continued another 10 years, and, the practice continued into the 20th century. On December 17, 1943, the Magnuson Act repealed the Exclusion Act. Repealing the act allowed growth and assimilation of the Chinese people. â€Å"The Chinese exhibit high affluence combined with a relatively high degree of segregation from Whites in a few metropolitan areas (Lee, C. N. , 2004). Redlining leads to the belief that the manisfestation of suburban ethnic districts may alleviate the need to bodily intergrate with Whites to obtain greater socioeconomic success. Despite the menial jobs the Chinese continued to grow financially, and, the affluent Chinese continued to live next door to their poorer neighborhood, an act of self-segregation; with the self-segregation encouraged forming their own chamber of commerce, public library, and hospitals. â€Å"The true destructive nature of residential segregation reared the discrimination perpetuated by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), Homeowners Loan Act, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the real estate industry, banks, and other financial institutions (Massey & Denon, 1993). Chinatown, San Francisco, is not just the largest Chinese Town outside of Asia, but is the largest example of redlining. The 1870 anti-Chinese ordinances passed in San Francisco to curtail housing and employment options. The ordinances passed successfully pushed the Chinese into an unwanted area. Having them in one area made it easier for San Francisco law enforcement of curfews. In the San Francisco bay area the garment industry is made up of 53% Asian workers, mostly women. â€Å"These ‘sweat shops’ are overcrowded, not well ventilated and poorly lit† (urbanhabitat. org). The garment workers are exposed to particles and toxic chemicals. Many women bring their children to work with them, and the particles and chemicals are known to be especially are harmful to children. Many Asian-American associates support reverse discrimination against Asian-Americans as demonstrated by being denied college entrance (asianam. com). Thomas Espenthade and Alexandria Walton Radford examined data on students applying to college in 1997 and discovered what looks to be different standards for different racial groups. Miss Havisham seems a particularly creepy figure as she sits at a dressing table in an old, yellowed wedding gown. The room seems to be frozen in time, and Miss Havisham, dressed as a bride, looks more like a corpse. When Pip sees Miss Havisham, she is still wearing her wedding dress. â€Å"She was dressed in rich materials – satins, and lace, and silks – all of white. Her shoes were white. And she had a long white vail, dependant from her hair, and she had bridal flowers in her hair, but her hair was white. † Making Miss Havisham wear her wedding dress at first gives us the impression that she maybe is meant to be getting married that day. However we do soon find out that she has been in her dress for years. This shows us that Miss Havisham is depressed. Throughout the next 10 or so chapters, Pip leaves and moves to London with the money from an unknown source. Pip becomes a gentleman living with his friend. In Chapter 27, Joe Gargery comes to visit Pip in London. After Pip reads the letter from Joe’s new wife, he then says â€Å"Let me confess exactly with what feelings I looked forward to Joes coming. Not with pleasure†¦ † This sentence shows us that Pip had grown up and matured also. And even become a snob. Pip now looks down on Joe as he is common and not a gentleman like Pip. These few lines spoken by Pip start to make us feel a bit distant from him as he is now so different, it’s as if the reader doesn’t know this man. When Pip arrives, he greets Joe saying â€Å"How are you Joe? † to which Joe replies â€Å"Pip, how air you Pip? † Joe’s speech is a garbled attempt at sounding over-eloquent. It could read as if Joe is mimicking Pip, trying to say that he is posh, however, I think that all Joe is trying to do is act more upper class than he is infront of Pip so as not to embarrass him. However, he does. Joe then says â€Å"Us two being alone now sir-† as to which Pip interrupts. By calling Pip â€Å"Sir,† and he seems to use his hat to divert his nervous energy, and it’s constantly falling on the floor. This passage makes the reader feel uncomfortable for both Pip and Joe as the use of dramatic irony sets in. We know what both the characters are thinking and feeling, yet they do not. In Chapter 48, we read that Pip has to travel back to meet Miss Havisham. She has requested to meet with him. In chapter 49 Pip arrives at Miss Havisham’s house. On of the first few lines we read are after Miss Havisham say â€Å"Thank you† to Pip and we read that Pip â€Å"remarked a new expression on her face, as if she were afraid of me. † This shows automatically that there has been a role reversal. Earlier Pip had been weak and timid and now it is as if Miss Havisham is the child. The cruelty of her actions seems to have finally hit her, and she breaks down, crying â€Å"What have I done! † and even falls to her knees before Pip and begs his forgiveness. Dickens uses Miss Havisham in this Chapter as if she had ‘seen the light’ and wants to repent her sins. At first in the book we don’t really like her, but now as she repents we grow fond of her and do indeed like her. Pip leaves the room, though returns a few minutes later on some odd presentiment. Just as he walks through the door, the old woman’s dress catches fire, and Pip wrestles her to the ground to smother the flames. Both of them are burned, Miss Havisham so badly that she is wrapped in gauze and laid out on the bridal table, in a sort of hideous echo of her normal white bridal gear. The doctor warns that there is danger of her going into nervous shock. To conclude. Charles Dickens, one of the great writers of his time, uses many different techniques in Great Expectations to manipulate the reader’s feelings towards a character, such as repetition, confusion, the use of colours and dramatic irony.
